How Women to Balance Being a Mom and Running Successful Business

It’s been almost 50 years since the fifties ended, and women seldom spend more time in the kitchen than an office. They are more empowered in the workforce than ever before, but that doesn’t stop their desire to have children. Because of these dual aspirations, it is more challenging than ever for woman to balance a successful career, with maintaining a traditional family life. Often, there is no easy solution to this dilemma; they either have to leave their jobs or put their children in day care. However, some women have managed to accomplish both of their goals of being a stay at home mom, and being a successful business owner. For many women, there would be no greater experience than watching their children and business grow simultaneously. Below are five steps to balancing being a mom and running a successful business.

1. It all starts with good work ethic. Not everyone is lucky enough to grow up with a family of entrepreneurs to teach them at a young age, but it’s never too late to get into the right state of mind. To accomplish all of your goals, you have to be ready to be a hard worker, and take chances. It will take sacrifices, but it is most important to keep your goals in mind and stay motivated.

2. You have to know your dream life to work toward it. Every person is unique, and while many women want to balance motherhood with a career, there are different ways women strive to achieve this. Picture your life as a ladder, and decide what you want on the top rung. What would your ideal life consist of? Put a lot of thought into this step, because the rest of your life is working up each rung to achieve that end goal. Do you want to be a stay at home mom, or maintain your office job? It is all possible; you just have to have a destination to focus on in order to keep your motivation.

3. Embrace the things in your life, don’t hide them. Years ago, one executive was told she would never succeed in a man’s world if she brought her children to work with her. Since then she has learned to be proud to be a mother that runs her own company. Instead of hiding elements of your life, find ways to incorporate them into it. If you have children and are trying to start a company, get them involved. Not only will you have an extra set of hands, you’ll also be teaching them valuable skills and good work ethic.

4. Use pre-existing skills to tie your two lives together. Many women hold career jobs for years before becoming a mother. Use the management, organizational, financial, etc. skills that you developed from a past job, incorporate them into your new business.

5. Incorporate teamwork into every facet of your life. Teamwork is a powerful motivator. Create a team within your family by having everyone involved and supportive of one another. Create a team within your business, by working together to get each goal achieved. Lastly, create a team with other women who try to balance their lives the same way. Remember that most women go through this same dual-desire dilemma, so don’t be afraid to ask for or lend support.
